New Generation Jazz in Brighton

LAUNCH – Summer Programme!!!

ByonwithComments Off on LAUNCH – Summer Programme!!!

After a trio of sell-out shows from February to April brought 2018 in with a bang, NEW GENERATION JAZZ are proud to present our programme for the Summer. Between May and July we’ve got three more of the most exciting young acts in the UK coming to the Verdict, to deliver a two-set gig in Brighton’s only purpose-built jazz club, preceded by a free, open-access workshop. In May we’ve got internationally recognised sax virtuoso Sam Eagles with his acclaimed Spirit project, featuring his equally killing brother Duncan; June brings us South London trombone sensation Rosie Turton, taking a break from frontline duties in the mighty Nerija to propagate her own brand of multi-cultural jazz mashup; and in July we’ve got super-hip young trumpeter Mark Kavuma with his aptly named Banger Factory – an allstar band of the hottest, most hard-swinging players around.

Summer is especially busy time for us as we’ll also be returning to Love Supreme Festival, in charge of their Bandstand and Friday Night Arena programming. Returning for the fifth year, we always have an amazing time here with the LSF crew, and it’s such a treat to be able to feature some of our favourite players from New Generation and elsewhere on the Bandstand and Arena stages. If you’re at Love Supreme this year, drop by and say hi!

We were honoured to welcome Trish Clowes’ new project as part of our summer season – her fresh

take on the classic organ trio-plus- horn, MY IRIS, was a standout gig and a great addition to the

rather jazz-free May Festival – Ross Stanley, Chris Montague and James Maddren make a real all-

star band, so the players who turned up for the workshop at the Verdict couldn’t believe their luck!

New Generation Jazz were utterly stoked to present a show by the awesome Ezra Collective. The Ezras are the third band from the Tomorrow’s Warriors organisation a New Generation to play a show this year, following in the footsteps of Nerija and Moses Boyd’s Exodus. The bar was set high, but the band didn’t disappoint, thrilling the biggest sell-out crowd yet.

Thanks again, and good luck with the upcoming album release!

New Generation Jazz were delighted to kick off 2016 in fine style with the second of their collaborations with the Tomorrow’s Warriors group; the hotly-tipped Nerija.

In the afternoon, altoist Cassie Kinochi and bassist Inge Eichler, accompanied by piano star and Zara MacFarlane collaborator Peter Edwards, paid a visit to Dorothy Stringer Secondary School to present a workshop to 30 extremely excited students. Thanks are due to Mr Andy Barbour and Mr Pete Davison for co-ordinating this event so successfully with the Stringer music department – the gospel of jazz was spread to some very promising young players.

Expectations were high for the evening show and Nerija more than fulfilled them. Playing a selection of material from their upcoming EP release, the girls showed why they’re making waves across the jazz community with their free-flowing soulful sound, with Nubya Garcia especially impressing on tenor sax.
